There Are No Truths
But there are constants
Some days, friends.
Most of the time the sun rises to find us all happy, having the first or second or fifth cup of coffee. Armed with the best intentions and kind words for anyone who wants them— that’s how I try to begin each day.
But some days it’s like there is a force conspiring to give you decaf.
The post you scheduled to go out on a Monday is actually set for Tuesday. The thing you fixed a week ago isn’t as fixed as you want it to be. Google can’t help you. Someone’s surviving tragedy and you have guilt for your own emotions about less intense problems. All the assumptions and presumptions, the slow drivers in the fast lane, work is so worky, and there’s paperwork you’re behind on (because gremlins hide stuff on your desk). And then the news, oh good gracious, and the social media, and and and—
Pump the brakes.
We’re going to interrupt your program already in progress.
Take a big deep breath, like the kind that stretches your whole chest. Unstick your tongue from the roof of your mouth while you’re at it. Unclench that jaw, babe.
Then sigh out alllll the things. Let them go.
You are not the news. You are not your job. You can only do so much about desk gremlins. And you can’t do anything about other drivers. Not. One. Thing.
Do that breathing thing again, taking in a big deep breath full of cooling vibes to calm this moment. Think of your favorite shade of blue. And then push out every little thing that is not you, in this moment, with a whoosh of air. Let it out.
I’m a fan of the serenity prayer, and its many variations. I’m also a fan of all music, and the line I have for you today is from the incomparable 90’s rock song ‘What I Got’ by Sublime: “F*ck it, or fight it, it’s all the same.” Which I interpret to mean stuff is what stuff is— everything else is your reaction. And all of those reactions are valid. But you don’t have to carry them for long.
Maybe close your eyes and do that giant breath in one last time, and then sigh out all the dust of life that isn’t serving your inner sunshine.
Hold yourself in those sunbeams for a moment. The golden light of possibility is here in this stillness, this breath.
You deserve to have a moment of zen, a minute of peace, and some release from this life and time we live in. Because no matter the weather, you are the whole sky. Constant. Present. Sublime.
